Development and evaluation of interactive educational material on the orientation of elementary school teachers about learning disorders (2013)

- Abstract: Introduction: Despite the importance of joint action between teachers and speech pathologists to promote student learning, the work of the speech pathologist rarely is part of the school routine. Still, teachers have little knowledge about issues in the development of written language, such as when to start this process, factors that favor and the origin of difficulties. Objectives: To inform, through the development of interactive educational material, school teachers about the main aspects of school difficulties and learning disorders and to analyze the effectiveness of the material as a guidance tool. Methods: Participants were 28 elementary school teachers from two cities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil (10 public schools and 18 private schools). The CD-ROM has been prepared based on the doubts and anxieties of teachers on the subject. To evaluate the contribution of the material in the teachers’ knowledge, we required them to complete a questionnaire before they were given access to the CD-ROM (pretest) and after two weeks of material study (post-test). Regarding the evaluation of the technical aspects (quality of the pages, links, images, videos, language, and content), the teachers completed a specific questionnaire along with the post-test questionnaire. Results: When comparing the pre- and post-test, statistically significant differences were noted in the definition of school difficulties and causes of school learning and learning disorders. Regarding the teachers’ concerns about the subject, the pre-test showed that most teachers would like to have knowledge of specific activities for working with students who have difficulties in reading and writing. In the post-test, it was observed that the material contributed to filling this need. As for the technical aspects, the material was rated “excellent” by the majority of teachers in all aspects evaluated.Conclusion: The results showed that the CD-ROM helped improve the knowledge of teachers regarding school difficulties and learning disorders.
