Mathematical modeling of estrogen degradation in enzimatic membrane reactor (2019)

- Abstract: Estrogens are endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that achieve the waterbodies by our wastewater. Due this, some countries are creating legislations aiming the development of processes to degrade EDCs in wastewater treatment plants. Some processes in literature suggests the use of laccase, a multicopper polyphenol oxidase enzyme, present in many organisms to degrade EDCs. This work presents the mathematical modeling of EDCs degradation by laccase in an enzymatic membrane reactor (EMR). The purposed kinetic models were assessed using the Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) in order to obtain reliable models and parameters to describe the behavior of experimental data from six experiments presented in literature. Results show that the kinetic models assessed were able to represents the degradation into EMR, presenting a good adjustment to experimental data and estimated parameters statistically significant. The values estimated for kinetic parameters indicates that the best condition for EMR operation was achieved using hydraulic residence time of 4 h, 1 mg/Lh addition rate and oxygen pulse of 0.5 h for both EDCs.
