- Abstract: Lignocellulose is the most abundant type of biomass which is mainly composed of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. Several lignocellulosic substances produced by industry are considered as waste and could be employed as raw materials in biotechnologic processes for the production of value-added products like enzymes. The production of enzymes from lignocellulosic biomass is carried out by microorganisms through the fermentation process in which the organic carbon content of lignocellulose is consumed as a nutrient source. The utilization of lignocellulosic waste could provide a cost-effective raw material for enzyme production which in turn reduces enzyme production cost. Microorganisms are capable of producing a variety of enzymes such as cellulase, hemicellulase, ligninase, lipase, protease, amylase, phytase, and inulinase using lignocellulosic substrate. Enzymes are applied in different industries including food, feed, pulp and paper, textile, brewing, and biofuel.
