- Abstract: The natural pigments, from microbial source, have been very promising in several industrial sectors, mainly replacing synthetic dyes, because the natural ones have some characteristics such as: they do not present toxicity to humans, they are biodegradable and they are not carcinogenic. Therefore, the search for these compounds in different organisms has been increasingly intensified, with emphasis on microalgae, the ones which produce significant amounts of carotenoids, in addition to reproducing faster than other organisms. Based on this context, a comparison between the probe ultrasound and the ultrasound bath was made in the extraction of total carotenoids, using biomass of the microalgae Dunaliella salina. At first, the microalgae was cultivated in bubble column photobioreactors for seven days, followed by the stage of biomass harvesting and recovery. After that, the biomass was submitted to extraction tests, using ethanol as solvent. In the ultrasound bath, the best result was 0,2856 mg g-1, obtained by a frequency of 40 KHz and extraction time of 10 minutes. In the probe ultrasound, the best result was 0,2970 mg g-1, obtained by a cycle of 0,7, amplitude of 100 % and extraction time of 5 minutes. The productivity results (mg g-1 min-1) showed that the probe ultrasound it was the most appropriate for the extraction of total carotenoids from D. salina biomass, attaing a productivity was 2,08 times higher than in the ultrasound bath.
