- Abstract: The versatility of the uses of biopigments in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, as some examples, reinforced the search for new renewable sources of these compounds. Among them, microalgae have a great potential in the production of these pigments due to the high content that can be accumulated in their cells linked to the fast growth of these microorganisms, making them great competitors for the synthetic routes of obtaining theses dyes, wich today still use large amounts of petrochemical products and draises environmental and safety concerns (SAINI et al., 2019; KOYANDE et al., 2019). Among the pigments most produced by microalgae, which, in addition to their role as dyes, have antioxidant, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties, are chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids, precursors of vitamin A, which has its highest production rates by the microalga Dunaliella salina, under specific stress conditions. The extraction of this pigment, under the effect of ultrasound, can present a yield up to 40 times greater than chemical methods of cell rupture (BANU et al., 2020). Thus, this work evaluated the performance of two different solvents (Acetone and ethanol), under the effect of ultrasound, in the extraction of these pigments.
