- Abstract: Hemicellulose present in lignocellulosic biomass can be converted into higher value-added products such as xylooligosaccharides and mannan oligosaccharides. These oligosaccharides have physicochemical and biological properties of great interest to several industry sectors, which has made them emerging molecules. They can be produced through chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis, focusing on high efficiency and income to fulfill market needs. The most well-known characteristic of these oligosaccharides is their action as prebiotics, since they are not digested by the human digestive system and can be used by the intestinal flora; however they present several other health benefits and technological uses. Nowadays, besides industrial production, research on novel production strategies is increasing, since these oligosaccharides have several advantageous properties and can be produced from a low-cost substrate.
