Lifetime measurements in odd and odd-odd nuclei (2018)

- Abstract: Isomeric nuclear states are those excited states which decay with long lifetimes (T1=2 > 10 ns); their study generally reveals, a large change in angular momentum in its decay, a small matrix element or a small transition energy [1]. By measuring lifetimes of isomeric states it is possible to obtain information about this states wave function, being a robust test for nuclear models. In this work, a system developed at the Laborat¶orio Aberto de F¶³sica Nuclear (LAFN) of University of S~ao Paulo called System for the Measurement of Isomeric States (SISMEI) was utilized [2]. Delayed coincidence between evaporated particles in a nuclear reaction and the delayed gamma-rays emitted from the isomeric state was used to measure lifetimes [3]. An experiment to measure the 7(¡) (E = 1229:87(4) keV ) isomeric state of 68Ga was performed. The experiment took about 80 hours with an event rate of about 80000 counts per second. The measured value was T1=2 = 60:8(11) ns, which is compatible, but more accurate, with experimental results obtained from other authors [4]. The nuclear structure of this nucleus was calculated with the Large Scale Shell Model by using two di®erent residual interactions; the results were compared with the known values [5]. The structure calculated with LSSM described the energy states and the order of excited states relatively well; one interaction was capable to describe better the quadrupolar electrical transition probability B(E2), which is related to the nuclear deformation. There are several others nuclei in the A=60-70 mass region with isomeric states that can be measured by SISMEI. The odd nuclei that can be populated in fusion-evaporation reactions at Pelletron accelerator includes 63Ga, 65Ge, 67Ga, 67Zn and 71As, as well as the odd-odd 66Ga. The reactions to populate excited states in such nuclei can utilizes 55Mn, 58Ni and 60Ni targets combined with 11B, 12C 16O, 18O and 19F beams [4]. More accurate experimental data from these nucle
