- Abstract: When exposed to ionizing radiation, digital electronic devices may not work as expected, as charge deposition may corrupt digital information stored and/or processed by these systems { these e®ects are under thorough scrutiny worldwide, as it may a®ect computer and data acquisition systems in very sensitive applications, as in airplanes, space missions, or radiation-¯lled experimental halls in nuclear laboratories. With the recent proposal of an accelerator with extremely intense beams, the issue of the errors caused by thermal neutrons came to the fore. For these neutrons the e®ects are much less understood, as they do not produce ionization directly; on the other hand, slow neutrons may produce ionizing radiations by means of nuclear reactions, both in the form of promptly-emitted particles and gamma-rays as in the form of delayed emissions caused by the decay of radioactive isotopes produced by these reactions.
