  • Abstract: Mucor circinelloides is an efficient filamentous fungus producer of mycelium-bound lipase and lipids, being able to assimilate a wide array of substrates, like agricultural wastes and industrial effluents. Biotechnological valorization of cheese whey, in which simultaneous reduction of the polluting load and conversion of the various compounds of the waste into added-value microbial metabolites is obtained, is a strategy of remarkable importance. Here, Mucor circinelloides URM 4182 was tested for the ability of producing biomass containing lipids and mycelium-bound lipases during cultivation on cheese whey, aiming to increase the cost-effectiveness of biodiesel production. Fungal cultivations were performed in 250 mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 50 mL of non-supplemented cheese whey at pH 4.5, 26 °C, 250 rpm. Lactose and galactose were used as carbon sources for comparative purpose. The 120 h growth in cheese whey provided satisfactory biomass concentration (4.1 g L-1 ) and lipid content (20%) revealing suitable fatty acid profile as feedstock for biodiesel production. Cultivated biomass also presented lipolytic activities up to 150 U g-1 . Thus, it can be concluded that the studied species show potential as microbial oil cell factory based in dairy by-products as substrates.
