- Abstract: Anaerobic digestion occurs as the biodegradation of part of the organic load of vinasse to produce biogas and biodigested vinasse, i.e., digestate. Digestate, in comparison with raw vinasse, presents lower concentration of inhibitory compounds, as phenolic structures, and lower levels of chemical oxygen demands. This work analyzed the effect of using vinasse digestate as a culture medium for Mucor circinelloides, an oleaginous fungal species. Results demonstrate that the M. circinelloides culture on vinasse digestate provides lower biomass accumulation, which is expected due to the lower organic material that can be used as nutrients by the fungi. On the other hand, the use of raw vinasse digestate still demonstrated to be a feasible culture medium for M. circinelloides, especially considering the culture process is able to remove about 40% of COD when compared to the levels of 25% observed when raw vinasse is used. In this sense, the use of digestate as a culture medium may be a feasible alternative to ethanol plants, as it would not only provide the production of biogas, but also fungal biomass with potential subsequent applications in the fuel industry.
