Ozone as a treatment to lower inhibition of vinasse as culture medium to Mucor circinelloides (2019)

- Abstract: Some components present in vinasse act as inhibitors to microbial processes, including the presence of phenolic compounds. This work analyzes the effects of direct submerged ozonation on vinasse in regards to the degradation of organic matter and phenolic compounds. Ozonation promotes a rapid degradation of phenolic structures and removal of approximately 30% of the Chemical Oxygen Demand levels in vinasse. The results indicate that if ozone is used as a pre-treatment to support the cell growth of Mucor circinelloides an oleaginous fungal species, the concentration of biomass and lipids accumulated by the fungi is increased by about 30%.
