- Abstract: Corn cob, lignocellulosic residue, contains per kg of dry matter approximately 391 g of cellulose, 421 g of hemicellulose, 91 g of lignin, 17 g of protein and 12 g of ashes. Hemicellulose, the major structural polysaccharide in plant cells, is composed of xylan. The xylans, processed in the raw form, present little industrial use with essential applications in the production of paper and furfuraldehyde by the degradation of xylose. Hemicelluloses can be isolated from the biomass by different pretreatments such as a steam explosion, autohydrolysis, organic solvents, alkali, dilute acids and enzymatic treatment. However, isolating xylan from lignocellulosic materials has limiting factors due to the recalcitrant structure, the presence of lignin and the interactions between its chemical constituents. There are some methods for extracting xylans from lignocellulosic materials based on the difference in solubility of xylans in acid, water, alcohol and alkali solvents which differ in yield, purity, degree of polymerization and the pattern of substitution of xylans extracted.
