- Abstract: Babassu, a tall, crowned palm of the genus Orbignya (Orbignya sp.), is divided into two species: Orbignya oleifera (babassu of the cerrado) and Orbignya martiana (babassu of the forest). The physical composition of the fruit indicates four useful parts: epicarp (11%), mesocarp (23%), endocarp (59%) and almond (7%). Babassu stands out as an oleaginous, and its main commercial products are the oil extracted (60%) of the almond and the pie resulting from this extraction process. The mesocarp, if fully processed, produces oil and starch (~ 50%), which represents the raw materials for biodiesel and ethanol respectively. Due to the economic potential of babassu, there is a need to take advantage of its remaining fractions (endocarp and epicarp). These fractions present the potential as a raw material of agglomerated panels, as well as of the fibers of the epicarp as reinforcement of composites. In this way, this work aimed to obtain lignins free of sulfur that have properties that make them attractive as a source of phenols with low molar mass or aromatic compounds.
