- Abstract: “Finance companies” (technically, credit, financing, and investment companies – SCFIs), as wel las franchise companies and bank correspondents, coexist with large banks within the same economic groups. We have tested the hypothesis that some “finance companies” focus on more vulnerable customers, who would accept to contract credit at higher interest rates than those practiced by large banks from the same holding. We have used time series based on data from the Central Bank of Brazil on interest rates. Some “finance companies” have higher interest rates when compared to the main banks within the same financial conglomerate. It may reflect the idea that the Brazilian financial conglomerates have different companies (their main banks and their SCFIs, for example) for different niche markets. However, we also find situations in which major banks charge higher interest rates than the same group’s “finance companies”. Furthermore, we present the main regulation of the SCFIs and the way they relate to banks, banking correspondents and franchises in Brazil. Finally, we examine the SCFI’s equity profile looking for eventual association among major banks and non-banking economic groups
