- Abstract: The establishment of dietary standards occured during the early 1860's in Britain as an effort to prevent starvation and diseases associated with starvarion during period of industrial dislocation and unemployment. Since those times, dietary standards or recommendations have been the focus of many researchers. Nowadays this recommendation is based on measured needs, and the values are set for specific nutrients. In the mid 1990's the Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Science, and Health Canada joined the Standing Commitee on the Scientific Evaliation of Dietary Reference Intakes, as result several publication of this group have been published and more are about to be issued. The present work is a historical review of the new dietary recommendation
