- Abstract: Aims: Here we established the normal ranges of concentrations of regulatory complement proteins such as factor H (fH), factor I (fI), and C4 binding protein (C4BP) in healthy Brazilian children from one month through 12 years and as well as in healthy adults. Reference values of will be interested to clinical and laboratory investigators of disorders associated with low levels of these proteins. Methods and Results: Serum was withdrawn from well-nourished children with no signs of infection and from adult blood donors. Protein concentrations were determined by Mancini at least in duplicate and data were only accepted from standard curves with R2 ³ 0.90. Before normal ranges were established (Healy, 1969) differences according to sex and age were analysed. We found no significant differences according to sex at a significance level of P < 0.05. The results were expressed respectively as lower limit, median, upper limit (age range). For fH: 271.80, 536.60, 1060.97 mg/mL (1m-1y); 325.10, 685.70, 1284.17 mg/mL (1-6y); 223.26, 571.20, 1712.42 (6-13y) and 228.56, 456.60, 829.00 (adults). Significant differences between 1-6y and adults and 6-13y and adults were found. For fI: 23.76, 51.40, 120.78 mg/mL (1m-1y); 29.97, 59.39, 103.54 mg/mL (1-6y); 34.03, 57.46, 100.49 (6-13y) and 38.78, 66.36, 100.49 mg/mL (adults). Significant but weak correlation between fH and fI was found in a group of 94 healthy children. For C4BP: 21.10, 61.62, 179.04 %NHS (1m-1y); 32.06,67.12, 112.88 %NHS (1-6y); 32.63, 62.37, 150.90 %NHS (6-13y) and 37.17, 62.37, 104.63 %NHS (adults). Conclusions: Data presented here are consistent with several published reports showing wide normal ranges and large standard deviations within each age group. Since these variations may reflect inherited variability it is important to establish reference values for each population
