- Abstract: Objetivo: Prenatal exposure to ethanol impairs dopamine (DA) system development. Increased motor activity has been related to changes in the DA receptor sensitivity in neonates and young rats exposed to alcohol during gestation. In this work, the spontaneous motor activity and apomorphine-induced circling behavior were registered to analyse motor activity in aged offspring exposed to alcohol during gestation. Métodos e Resultados: Pregnant Wistar rats received a high protein liquid diet with 37.5% ethanol-derived calories (EDC) or with maltose-dextrin substituted for ethanol (MDC) throughout gestation. Two years after birth, offspring was divided in two groups. One group did not received lesion and the animals were submitted to spontaneous motor activity and drug-induced circling behavior. Other group received a striatal lesion by means of a traumatic needle and the circling behavior was also registered by means of an infrared motion sensor activity monitor for 5-min interval during 25 min; the following parameters were depicted: resting time and event; small and large movement time and events.Circling behavior was triggered by apomorphine (APO, 0.05mg/kg) and was registered by an automated rotometer which monitor full (360°) body turns in either direction for successive 25-min interval during 75 min every 48 hours for 8 days. There were no differences in the spontaneous motor behavior between EDC and MDC groups at any studiedtime period. Bilateral circling was higher in the unlesioned offspring of EDC group only in the second 25-min and in the third 25-min blocks (p<0.05 and p<0.001, respectively). The difference between contraversive and ipsiversive circling behavior was also higher in the lesioned EDC group in the first, second and third 25-min blocks (p<0.001, p<0.001 and p<0.01, respectively). Conclusões: Ethanol consumption during gestation may promote changes on DA receptor function in the senescence which is observed only after drug stimulation.
