- Abstract: Objetivo: Locomotor training leads to improvement of stepping ability in animals. We demonstrate the time-course of the effects of moderate treadmill running in the behaviour of rats. Métodos e Resultados: Male Wistar rats (3 month old) were submitted to a twice a day, 5 day per week session on a treadmill: 10.5m/min for 20 min during 8 weeks. The spontaneous motor behaviour of trained (TR) and sedentary (SD) rats were analized weekly by a computerized Infrared motion sensor activity monitor for 30min per day, twice a week during 8 weeks. The spontaneous motor behaviour was analized by the following parameters: time without movements (movement time bellow 0.01s), time of small (movement time in the range of 0.01s and 1.0s long) and large movements (movements time than 1.0s). The statistical analysis was performed using t.-test, to compare data of the training and sedentary rats.Trained rats showed increment in the time (seconds) without movement (p< 0.0001), decreases of the number of events without movements (p< 0.01), decreases of the time of larger movements (p<0.0001), decreases in the number oflarge movements (p< 0.0001) from first week to eight weeks of training. After 8 weeks the motor behaviour was evaluated by Behavioral Analysis that included evaluation of simple and complex reflexes as well as spontaneous and evoked motor patterns. On the basis of this analysis, we measured functional deficits by following CBS (CombinedBehavioral Score). Decreased in the withdrawal reflex, in responses to pressure score [SD = 3 ± 0; TR = 2.71 ± 0.14] and in the angle of inclined plane were found in trained rats [SD= 54.28 ± 2.06; TR= 50.28 ± 0.28]. The CBS showed differences between trained and sedentary rats [SD= 7.14 ± 1.01; TR= 15 ± 4.22]. Conclusões: The preliminary results indicated that treadmill running interferes with spontaneous motor behaviour in rats detected by open field motion sensor activity monitor
