- Abstract: Xylitol is a sugar alcohol with several applications and is widely used in pharmaceutical, medicine and food industries. It is usually produced by chemical route, however, biotechnological process is a promising alternative due it can be carried out using mild conditions, presenting the possibility to use renewable sources as raw material in sustainable bioprocess. In this work, we present a new approach for xylitol production from sugarcane bagasse hemicellulosic hydrolysate in fluidized bed reactor (FBR) by using a novel Brazilian wild yeast-Candida Tropicalis UFMGBX12-a. Fermentation was carried out in a cylindrical column reactor fluidized by insertion of purified air at 30°C for 72 h. Results showed xylitol production of 9.16 g/L with yield of 0.39 g/g of xylose and volumetric productivity of 0.25 g/L.h was achieved after 48 h. This work besides contributing to development of sustainable alternatives for the production of this valuable polyalcohol, also indicates the requirement of further studies to be applied in process scale-up, due to the easy configuration of column reactor.
