- Abstract: ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) with different morphologies have a vast range of applications, ranging from solar cells, gas sensors, varistors, catalysts, electrical and optical devices, due to its exceptional physical and chemical properties [1,2]. In this study, we report the structural and optical characterization of a facile onepot synthesis of ZnO-NPs with 30 mL of glycerol-urea (3:1) v/v as a polyol-like route with 0.1 mol of Zn(NO3 )2 .6H2O as a zinc precursor. LiCl and NaCl salts (0.3 mol) were added as capping agents. Then, 0.2 mol of NaOH was added after solubilization and kept under stirring for 30 min. Deionized water (50 mL) was added in order to precipitate ZnO-NPs, the solid was washed and dried in a muffle [3]. The powders were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld analysis, optical spectroscopy techniques (UV-Vis, fluorescence and, FT-IR), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM). SEM/TEM results showed the addition of NaCl and LiCl salts lead to rod-shaped morphology and smaller spherical NPs respectively. XRD data presented single ZnO wurtzite phase with small texture effects and uniform crystallite size. Rod-shaped ZnO-NPs displayed photoluminescence spectra with different exciton- and defect-emission intensities; and UV-vis revealed a smaller optical band gap than usual ZnO-NPs that could be related to aspect-ratio and surface defects [4]. The ZnO-NPs developed in this work are initially under evaluation for the photoreduction of benzophenone.
