- Abstract: Objetivo:As emissões do sistema agroalimentar (SAG) representam entre 21% e 37% das emissões totais mundiais de gases de efeito estufa. Ao mesmo tempo, as mudanças climáticas têm o potencial de afetar fortemente o processo de produção do SAG.O objetivo é esclarecer o contexto que justifica a necessidade de transformação e transição do sistema agroalimentar, considerando as mudanças climáticas como um desafio prioritário.Método: A pesquisa é descritiva, de caráter bibliográfico, com abordagem qualitativa. A análise dos conteúdos selecionados na revisão da literatura permitiu abordar: a) como o sistema agroalimentar contribui com as emissões globais, e b) como ele pode ser afetado pelas mudanças climáticas. Resultados e Discussão: A cadeia agroalimentar tem sido responsável por emitir uma quantidade expressiva de gases de efeito estufa, especialmente nas etapas de mudança do uso da terra e nos processos de pré e pós-produção, que incluem fabricação, transporte, refrigeração, processamento de alimentos, embalagem e descarte de resíduos. Além disso, o setor agroalimentar tende a ser um dos mais impactados pelos efeitos das mudanças climáticas, especialmente devido ao aumento de eventos extremos que afetam a produção agrícola e a colheita, além dos demais processos da cadeia, resultando na elevação dos preços e na indisponibilidade dos alimentos. Implicações da Pesquisa: O artigo esclarece a importância do desenvolvimento e expansão produtiva por meio de sistemas agroalimentares sustentáveis, frente ao cenário de intensificação das mudanças climáticas e da insegurança alimentar.Originalidade/Valor: Buscou-secontribuir para a discussão sobre a necessidade de transformação e transição do sistema agroalimentar hegemônico, a partir de enfoques alternativos de produção que sejam mais sustentáveis e resilientes às mudanças
