- Abstract: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is considered as a promising platform chemical of great importance for the development of biorefineries based on lignocellulosic biomass, since HMF is a precursor for a variety of value-added chemicals, such as bioplastics, liquid fuels, and pharmaceuticals products. 5-HMF can be obtained from different carbohydrates such as glucose, fructose, sucrose, or inulin. Although the production of HMF from fructose is simpler, the use of raw materials such as carbohydrates from lignocellulosic biomass has been of great interest, since they are abundant and nonedible raw materials. In general, the main reaction of HMF production consists of hexoses dehydration in the presence of acid catalysts; it may include additional steps of hydrolysis of polysaccharides to obtain hexoses, when more complex raw materials such as cellulose are used. This chapter explains the catalytic production of 5-HMF, the stoichiometry, and the stages involved in cellulose hydrolysis to glucose, glucose isomerization into fructose, and fructose dehydration into HMF. In addition, an overview is given of recent HMF catalytic production studies. Besides, we also discuss the applications of HMF products such as monomers, intermediates in fine chemistry industry (pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, macrocyclic compounds), and fuels.
