- Abstract: Osseointegrated titanium implants are used for oral rehabilitation of totally or partially edentulous patients and usually show high rates of success. However, the inflammation of the peri-implantar tissues due to the presence of biofilms, has been identified among the main causes for failure of dental implants. Salivary pellicle is a thin film of salivary proteins that selectively coats oral surfaces and acts as an interface between the oral surface and the first layer of microorganisms. The formation of a saliva-derived protein pellicle on the surface of materials can provide protection against the colonization of microorganisms. The aim of this study was to characterize the in vitro zirconia salivary pellicle. Twelve disks of Zirconia and Hydroxyapatite were placed in a microtiter plate and incubated for 2 h at 37°C with parotid saliva. Subsequently the proteins were eluted from the disks' surfaces and submitted to high-throughput mass spectrometric analysis. A total of 27 and 16 proteins could bind to zirconia and hydroxyapatite surfaces, respectively. In addition, only 10 proteins were common between the two groups. The present study used state-of-the-art proteomic approaches to investigate the salivary proteins adsorbed to zirconia surface, where most of the identified proteins are related to antimicrobial functions. This is an ongoing study, where additional experiments are need for a more comprehensive investigation of the pellicle formation on zirconia surface.
