- Abstract: The spread of the usage of the internet and the lower costs for broadband circuits led to an increase of the volume of transactions amongst companies, practice also known as e- business. One of the means of adhering to this environment is through the exposure of business functions as services in the so called Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). However, the adoption of the new architecture cannot disregard the pre-existing legacy systems, where important IT investments and business knowledge reside. A review of the academic literature finds different approaches for this issue, varying from the replacement of the legacy to the wrapping through a SOA interface layer. Through a case study, this article shows how a company - the Brazilian subsidiary of an American group - from the services industry approached, using the wrapping technique, a demand from important customers for starting B2B practices through SOA. The study found that the decision for a modernization strategy depends on the quality and the level of knowledge the organization owns of the code and requirements embedded in the legacy. Besides, it depends on the configuration of the legacy with regard to the separation in logical layers of interface, processing and data. The study has also found that the wrapping approach allowed the company to replace the legacy system, some years after the deployment of SOA, with no impact for its customers. The combination of SOA and EAI architectures has also prepared the environment for a future merge into a global instance of the same legacy. The case study has also shown that, given the flexibility provided by SOA, return on investment (ROI) in this technology for B2B purposes can be accelerated through the development of internal SOA applications
