Abstract: In a sample of 3297 death certificate, it was possible, through investigation of each case, to indicate the underlying cause of death ("true"u.c). In the cases in which the "true" u. c. was declared in any position on the original deatlh certificate, the use of the selection and modification rules made possible to select and to code the "true" u. c. in more than 85 percent of the cases
