- Abstract: Purpose The adequacy of nursing care to the cleft lip-palate surgical patients depends on the recognition of their need of care. The study had the objective of identifying the nursing diagnoses and their frequency in the pre- and post-operatory phase of the elective plastic surgery of those patients. Methods The nursing diagnoses of 40 patients were identified in the pre- and post-operatory phases (52.5% female and mean age of 22.3 years) based on the evaluation data according to the Functional Health Patterns, by interview and physical exarnination. Results Four hundred and fifteen nursing diagnoses were identified (171 in the pre-operatory and 244 in the post operatory phase). The mean of nursing diagnosis for patient in the pre-phase was 4.7 (±2.3) and "t" Student p less 0.0001. The McNemar test showed significant difference in the frequencies between the pre and the post-operatory phase of 9 out of 35 diagnosis categories at least in one of the phases (29-pre, 26-post). Conclusions There is a great variety of need of nursing care among the studied patients, with sharp differentiation be tween the pre- and the post-operatory phase. The results will be the basis for the programs of qualification of human resources of nursing for those customers.
