- Abstract: Adenovirus type 7 (HAdV-7) is associated with epidemic outbreaks of acute respiratory disease. Different genome types have been described (7a to 7k) and their distribution reported. Studies on the worldwide distribution of HAdV-7 have shown that genome type 7b is widely spread with predominance in Europe, North and South-America. The genome type 7h, a more virulent type, has been detected, since 1986, exclusively in Argentina, Chile and UruguayIn Brazil, the genome type 7e circulated from 1980 to 1983, then was replaced by the type 7b, which predominate type after 1985. Recently, we detected HAdV-7h associated to conjunctivitis, in São Paulo, in 1994. This finding alerted us to the emergence of the type 7h in our region and its possible spread into the community. To confirm this hypothesis, a collection of nasopharingeal aspirates obtained in 1995, from children hospitalized with respiratory infections, was analysed. Immunofluorescence screening had detected 17 adenovirus infections out of 211 children studied. Adenoviruses were isolated in Hep2 or HEK-293 cells then serotyped by neutralization and genotyped by restriction analysis. From these isolates: 6/17 belong to the Subgenus C, 9/17 to the Subgenus B and 2 were no yet classified. All Subgenus B isolates were classified as being serotype 7, genotype HAdV-7h, with restriction profiles closely related to the Argentine strain. From the initial isolation of HAdV-7h in Argentina until its detection is São Paulo, almost 10 years passed. The geographic distance between the two regions probably was shortened by the recent increase in population mobility by tourism or economic reasons
