- Abstract: Adenoviruses are associated to respiratory and gastroenteric syndrome in children less than 5 of age. Members of the Subgenus C, serotypes 1, 2 and 5 are the most frequently isolated. Those belonging to Subgenus B, serotype 3 and 7, are described as epidemic, associated to acute respiratory disease and faringo-conjunctival fever. From March 1991 to March 1992, a prospective study on rotavirus and adenovirus infections was carried out in children attending the Day-Care Center of the Hospital Universitario -USP, São Paulo. During this period, 34 children less than 18 months of age were followed. From each child, every week, a faecal sample was collected, giving a total of 608 specimens. These were submitted to the EIARA immuno-enzymatic assay. Out of the total of 34 children followed, 11 (35%) had adenovirus infection and 10 (29,4%) rotavirus infection. The adenovirus infections were distributed in two outbreaks: the first one in April-May, with children presenting mild respiratory symptoms and the second one in September-October, as inapparent infection. The adenovirus samples were initially inoculated in HEp2. As most of them showed fastidious culturing until second passage they were sub-cultivated on HEK-293 cells for three more passages. The isolated viruses were tittered and are being submitted to neutralization. The viral DNA was extracted from the infected cell cultures and submitted to restriction analysis with several enzymes. The samples from the first outbreakcould not be typed until present. Those collected at the second outbreak presented a restriction profile of members of Subgenus C
