- Abstract: Sulfonated poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) is the most used material for application in catalysis. However, the development of copolymers containing longer cross-linkers can improve diffusion and chemical properties. In the present study, the use of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker was assessed in order to find optimal conditions to produce particles with high ion exchange capacity (IEC). The dimethacrylate resins were tested as catalysts in the esterification of acetic acid with isoamyl alcohol and the results were compared to those obtained for the commercial styrene-co-divinylbenzene resin Amberlyst 36. It was found that the resins made with EGDMA achieved higher conversion (about 80 %) than that of Amberlyst 36 (about 25 %) and also had a higher swelling index, indicating that dimethacrylate-based resins allow better accessibility to catalytic sites than divinilbezene-based resins, resulting in better catalytic activity.
