Techno-economic analysis of 1G2G integrated sugarcane biorefinery with dilute acid pretreatment using different solids content (2019)

- Abstract: A techno-economic analysis of an integrated first- and second-generation (1G2G) sugarcane biorefinery that uses dilute acid pretreatment was performed. Computational tools and simulation platforms were used to assess the economic viability of two biorefinery scenarios considering 5% and 10% of solids content in the pretreatment reactor. For both solids content, the enzymatic hydrolysis yield of cellulose was considered 45% for 24 hours of reaction and C5 liquor generated in pretreatment was fermented to ethanol. The scenario with lower solids content had lower final ethanol yield and greater surplus electricity. On the other hand, when more solids were used in the pretreatment reactor, 2G production cost was lower, but the larger share of 2G ethanol in the integrated 1G2G plant implied on both higher annual operating costs and increased 2G capital cost, resulting in a slightly lower Internal Rate of Return (IRR). Higher economic impacts in the process were related to the costs of sugarcane, 2G capital and chemical inputs. Our findings can direct the future research of 2G ethanol production that involves the dilute acid pretreatment of sugarcane biomass, as well as studies regarding 1G2G integrated biorefineries, thus contributing to the development of sugarcane biorefinery models.
