- Abstract: Naphthalimide derivatives have gained prominence in recent years due to their applications in several areas such as optoelectronics with optical and audible sensors, biomedicine with catalysts and drug delivery and formation of molecular gels [1]. Naphthalimide compounds have photophysical and photochemical properties arising from their molecular structure, making them electron accepting and performing electrostatic interactions with each other or through electron donor groups, such as anions [2-3]. In the present work, naphthalimide derivatives were synthesized from 1, 4, 5, 8 – naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. Using the synthesized derivatives, systematic studies of their photophysical properties were carried out by means of UV-Vis and fluorescence. There was a change in photophysical properties due to factors in addition to the structural change, namely concentration of the imidic derivative, type of solvent, presence of different electron donors and presence of amines. It was possible to observe the aggregation characteristics of the imidic compounds themselves in which the solvent participates, defining the strength of such interactions, with emphasis on tetrahydrofuran, which in high concentration presented aggregation of the imides and elevation of fluorescence, configuring a possible case of aggregation-induced emission. For the presence of electron donor species, there were cases of suppression and increase in fluorescence related to the properties of the anions involved (F, I, BF4). The reaction of an imidic derivative solubilized in DMSO with amines was carried out and a color change as well as the UV-Vis spectrum change over time was observed, being able to configure a case of radical formation.
