- Abstract: The control of crystallite size, optical and structural phase of a photocatalyst its intimately related to its capability of advanced oxidation processes and therefore its activity. CdS crystallized in greenockite (zincblend) and hawleyite (cubic) phases, and it is used from photoresistors and solar cells to photocatalysis. But CdS has some limitations due to oxidization of the sulfates, and phase transformations that can influence its photoactivity. In this work, atmosphere, and temperature-controlled calcination of CdS-based photocatalyst for 4-chlorophenol biodegradation[1]. The photocatalyst was synthesized by precipitation at room temperature from chloride precursor. washed, and dried at 100 ºC. Calcination temperatures were 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, and 700 °C under N2 atmosphere and closed crucible. XRD with Rietveld analysis for phase quantification and UV-vis for optical characterization resulted in forming >90% of hexagonal CdS (P63mc) phase, crystallite size of optical gap of 2,37 eV and the highest photodegradation. At 700 °C there is formation of cubic metallic CdO phase which is responsible for the decline of the materials photoactivity.
