- Abstract: Implementation of an online aerosol module in Brazilian global model (BAM) is underway at CPTEC/INPE, Brazil. Feedbacks from aerosol microphysical processes to the Morrison double-moment cloud microphysics scheme simulates the aerosol-cloud interactions, and the latter is coupled to the radiation model to further simulate the impacts of aerosol-cloud interactions on radiation in BAM. Existing radiation parameterization in BAM includes the UK Met Office (UKMO), CLIRAD developed at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and RRTMG developed at the Atmospheric and Environmental Research Inc. The NWP, seasonal and climatic studies with BAM have used CLIRAD and RRTMG parameterizations, however, there is no consensus yet on the parameterization yielding optimal results across all spatial and temporal scales for BAM. The aerosol module in BAM has been extended to compute aerosol radiative properties within the RRTMG model. In this work, we propose to compare performance of the shortwave radiation parameterizations – CLIRAD_SW and RRTMG_SW, in the offline mode. The first part of this study and considering as preliminary results, the offline models will be run in 1-d, and driven by BAM outputs that will include aerosol microphysical fields resulting from the aerosol-cloud interactions. The variables that will be examined include fluxes and heating rates, and the optical properties.
