Autotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation of the microalgae chlorella vulgaris in bubble column reactor: cultivation conditions and potential for effluent treatment (2021)

- Abstract: In this work, the best conditions for the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris was determined, seeking for a higher productivity in biomass. The variables evaluated in the culture medium using a Taguchi L8 orthogonal array were: brightness, biomass recycling after lipid extraction and nutrients concentration (NaNO3, K2HPO4, KH2PO4 and glycerol). Then, for the best growing conditions (with respect to brightness and biomass recycling) the feasibility of using the effluent of the Sewage Treatment Plant (ETP) of the Engineering School of Lorena (EEL-USP) as a culture medium for Chlorella vulgaris was analyzed. According to the results, a greater relevance was obtained for biomass productivity (1.03 g/L) and lipid production rate (8,792 g/L.d) when the brightness (12 h), biomass recycling after lipid extraction (0 g), nutrient concentration: NaNO3 (7.5 mL/L), K2HPO4 (15 mL/L), KH2PO4 (5 mL/L) and glycerol (2 g/L). Relating to the culture on the higher productivity of biomass (2.58 g/L.d) and lipids (83.35 mg/L.d) were obtained from it under heterotrophic condition, which was 137 times better than soya.
