- Abstract: Accurate representa,on of aerosol size distribu,on is crucial in modeling aerosol processes such as aerosol dynamics, chemistry and cloud radia,ve forcing, to name a few, given the size dependence of these processes. While aerosol-radia,on interac,ons are strongly modulated by the par,cle diameter, aerosol-cloud interac,ons depend mainly on the size distribu,on and mixing state of the par,cles. Atmospheric aerosols influence cloud forma,on via ac,va,on of cloud condensa,on nuclei, which regulates the cloud radia,ve forcing and precipita,on pa@erns. However, there is considerable uncertainty in es,ma,ng the aerosol-cloud interac,ons due to the variability of aerosols, clouds and complex feedback amongst them at various spa,o-temporal scales. In this work, we inves3gate the impact of aerosol size distribu3on on modeling aerosolcloud interac3ons in shallow stra3form clouds to gain a process-level understanding of these interac3ons. The aerosol parameteriza,on in the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model (BAM) is a simplified version of the Modal Aerosol Model (MAM) aerosol microphysical module, which has been extended to include droplet ac,va,on and nuclea,on in the Morisson double-moment scheme. BAM simula,ons for a case study over South America are compared with satellite- and ground-based observa,ons. Preliminary results on BAM's performance with new parameteriza,on show a good agreement for precipita,on over South America.
