Autogenous bone block (ABB) versus Xenogeneic Bone Block (CXBB) to evaluate treatment for reconstruction of atrophic alveolar ridge (2021)

- Abstract: The objective was to compare the performance of the gold standard ABB with the equine CXBB in horizontal bone augmentation of edentulous atrophic ridges. Sixty-four patients with single or multiple dental absences (up to 4 teeth) and with an alveolar crest with severe horizontal bone defect (<4mm thick) were randomized and divided into two groups for horizontal bone augmentation with CXBB or ABB. CXBB and ABB blocks were fixed to the atrophic bone and complementary GBR around the block was performed using DBBM and CM. Horizontal bone thickness was measured 2 mm below the alveolar crest at the augmentation surgery and after 30 weeks of healing at the implant placement surgery. Sixty-seven patients were included for the increase of the alveolar ridge (CXBB mean increase is 3.69 ± 1.55 mm; ABB mean increase is 3.51 ± 1.23 mm). Possibility to place an implant (CXBB 96.7%; ABB 100%), need to perform secondary augmentation at the time of implant placement (CXBB 13%; ABB 10%) and graft removal (CXBB 3.3%).CXBB promoted a favorable increase in the horizontal crest and allowed the implant placement in alveolar edges similar to ABB.
