Coffee elemental analysis via x-ray fluorescence and gamma-ray spectrometry (2018)

- Abstract: This study aims to analyze the macro and micronutrients in samples of South American Co®ee powder in two di®erent stages of co®ee preparation, before and after (co®ee ground) the extraction of the beverage, which is often consumed by most people in South America countries [1]. In the analyzed samples the concentrations of the main elements, such as calcium, iron and strontium were measured using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) analysis. We also investigated the presence of 40K and the radionuclides from the uranium and thorium series decays using the method of the gamma-ray spectrometry. Quantifying macro and micronutrients, as well as radionuclides present in food to verify the daily ingestion. The study of co®ee powder, it is worth mentioning that the Brazilian annual consumption is higher than 20 million bags of 60 kg, according to the Brazilian Association of Co®ee Industry (ABIC) [2]. The results obtained using these techniques allowed to estimate ingestion index for each natural radioisotope, macro and micronutrient concentrations identi¯ed in the co®ee samples. The identi¯cation of the micronutrients in co®ee grounds and powder, in ppm concentration, using a ¯ltered X-Ray technique was shown evidencing the capability of the technique [3]. The dose values from the naturally occurring radionuclides calculated in co®ee powder for each analyzed sample will be compared with the IAEA [1]. Preliminary results show that the values found for di®erent concentrations depend on the origin of the co®ee, indicating that the soil type and planting conditions may a®ect the transfer of these elements in the ¯nal product. It was also investigated if chemical compounds presence in the water in°uences the measurements, using hyper pure water.
