- Abstract: The availability of secondary beams opened a large ¯eld of research in low energy nuclear physics. Experimental studies involving secondary beams of nuclei near to the drip lines (exotic nuclei) led to the discovery of new phenomena such as neutron and proton halos, changes in the nuclear shell structure and many more. Since 2004 there is in Brasil a system capable of producing secondary beams of light exotic nuclei. The RIBRAS (Radioactive Ion Beams in Brasil) system is in operation in one of the beam lines of the 8UD Pelletron accel- erator. RIBRAS consists of two superconducting solenoids which use the in-°ight technique to select and focus the particles produced in reactions between the Pelletron primary beam and primary targets, usually 9Be. Low energy secondary beams of 6He, 8Li, 7Be, 8B, 12B and others have been produced with intensities from 104 up to 106 pps and elastic scattering and reactions measurements have been performed with these exotic projectiles impinged on secondary targets of di®erent masses. A systematic study allowed to identify an enhancement in the total reaction cross sections, when exotic projectiles are used, in comparison to stable projectiles of similar masses. Also, a large production of alpha particles has been identi¯ed in collisions between the neutron rich 6He and heavy targets such as 120Sn, even at low energies. So far, mostly solid state detectors have been used to detect the charged particles produced in the reactions. More recently however, new techniques using LYSO
