- Abstract: This study evaluated the changes in inclinations of the lower incisors and the morphology of the symphysis due to pre-surgical orthodontic treatment, since the design of the limits of orthodontic movement is an important factor to be considered in all orthodontic treatments, but mainly in cases of dental decompensation prior to orthognathic surgery. The sample consisted of 30 adult individuals with skeletal class III malocclusion submitted to pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. Cone beam computed tomography scans were obtained at the beginning of treatment and prior to surgery. The initial and pre-surgical three-dimensional models were superimposed using automated voxel-based registration on the mandible to evaluate symphysis inclination and thickness and lower incisor decompensation movement, resulting from the pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. Three-dimensional displacements of landmarks at the symphysis were quantifed and visualized with color-coded maps and semi-transparent superimpositions. Pearson's correlation tests were performed. Moderate and statistically signifcant correlations were observed between the inclination of the lower incisor and the inclination of the symphysis. Contrarily, no statistically signifcant correlation was found between the thickness of the symphysis and the inclination of the lower incisor
