- Abstract: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the attenuation of LED composite polymerization light radiant exposure (RE) when applied through proximal slot cavities utilizing MARC Patient Simulator's (PS) spectrophotometer. Two ivorine permanent molar (#46) were prepared to receive a Class II restoration with proximal slot only, one cavity had 3mm occlusal opening while the other had a 4mm one. Teeth were then sectioned horizontally just above the gingival floor level so that the remaining depth of the proximal box was maintained at 4mm. A Tofflemire matrix band and retainer with black paper were used around the tooth circumference. The specimen was then seated on anterior sensor of PS and subjected to a 10s light-polymerization cycle with 3 LPUs (Bluephase/DemiPlus/ DeepCure). RE (J/cm2) was recorded on the MARC PS software v.4.1.6, via the proximal slot cavity and at baseline (light directly applied on spectrometer sensor). RE data were analyzed with ANOVA and Pillair's Trace. A significant interaction was detected between cavity opening size and the type of lamp, Pillair's Trace=.99, F (4, 24)=5.90, p=.002, indicating a large effect size (partial 2=.50). Deep Cure produced highest average total energy J/cm2 baseline =16.40 (+1.31), 4mm = 11.02 (+0.19) and 3mm = 3.7 (+0.74) as compared to the other two LED lights regardless of the size of the opening. Attenuation of LED polymerization light when it travels through the proximal slot was statistically significant. Mean RE decreased with decreasing cavity opening for all three light units
