Chronic pain and use of medications and other therapies in Sao Paulo (Brazil): a population-based study using telephone interview (2009)

• Abstract: Background: The use of different strategies to manage chronic pain is common, but it is not known if there is any difference according to pain location. Aim: To analyze the use of medications and non-pharmacological therapies according to pain location in the population of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: It was a cross-sectional survey conducted in adults. The interviews were done by computed-assisted telephone. Chronic pain was defined as a pain that persists 3 months or more. The body pain location was analyzed through a diagram. Results: From 2446 subjects interviewed, 715 referred chronic pain (29.2%). From the 715 subjects, 60.1% related use of drugs for pain. No differences were observed regarding pain location when medications were indicated by physicians (p = 0.400) or pharmaceutics (p = 0.279) or friends (p = 0.619). Subjects with chronic pain on head referred self-medication more frequently (51.5%) when compared with pain in the chest (21.0%), back and neck (13.7%), arms and hands (10.2%), legs and feet (7.0%) or multiple locals (13.4%) (p = 0.001). The use of physiotherapy was more frequently referred by subjects who related pain in back and neck (13.6%) and multiple places (11.8%) (p = 0.016). Subjects with pain in the back and neck referred more frequently use of massage (12.4%; p = 0.019) and physical exercise (6.2%; p = 0.050). There is no difference for acupuncture (p = 0.129). Conclusions: Self-medication is more used by subjects with pain in head and the use of other types of therapy is done by subjects with pain in back and neck.
