- Abstract: Background: Telephone interviews are an useful tool in epidemiological studies, but its agreement with face-toface interview it is still uncertain. Aim: To analyze the agreement of face-to-face and telephone interviews to evaluate chronic pain. Methods: A random sample of 50 subjects aged≥18 years were took from a 2401 sample of population based study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil. The interviews were done by computed-assisted telephone interview using generated telephone numbers and a two-stage stratified sample design. Chronic pain was defined as pain experience in the last 3 months or longer or any discomfort on unpleasant sensation. Demographic, socioeconomic characteristics, recalled weight and height, co-morbidities were investigated. Pain was assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). The interviews were done first by telephone. After 2-7 days the face-to-face interviews were done in the house. Results: The mean age was 52 years old (range: 18-83), 66.7% was female and 60.8% was married. It was observed a high agreement for the co-morbidities reported (Kappa≥0.70), except for occupational disease and rheumatism. The agreement for presence of chronic pain was good (Kappa=52.4%; p< 0.001), but it was low for body pain location (Kappa>30%, p< 0.05). There were no significant differences between the mean of face-toface and telephone interviews for BMI, BPI scores for last 24 hours and last 3 months and age (p>0.450 for all). Strong intra-class correlation was found for the same variables (ricc>0.94 and p< 0.001 for all). Conclusions: Telephone interview is an useful tool to evaluate prevalence and characteristics of chronic pain
