- Abstract: Communication restrictions faced by geographically dispersed project teams whose members are unable to establish face-to-face interactions add risks to the success of Information Technology (IT) projects mainly due to limitations on the process of knowledge transfer among project participants. Simultaneously, literature suggests that the free flow of knowledge in project environments depends on the establishment of communication over a broad and highly connected social network. The achievement of this network structure in virtual contexts, however, appears to be challenged by traditional project management practices, where all information is usually processed and communicated by the project manager. The objective of this research is to apply the social network approach to the communicative interactions among members of a virtual IT project team, aiming at characterizing the network of communication mediated specifically by electronic mail (e-mail). The methodological approach selected is the case study, supported by social network analysis techniques. The results suggest low levels of network cohesion, associated with project managers’ characteristic of high centrality. However, additional network actors and alternative organizational structures appear to offer perspectives for the establishment of a broader and more connected communication network
