- Abstract: The research aimed to evaluate by photoelastic technique, the effect that the presence of posterior implants would have on reduction of tensions over retainers implants and mandibular residual ridge, for this reasons prepared models simulating rehabilitation with mandibular overdenture retained by two implants. Were simulated six clinical situations: Model 01, overdenture retained by two "O" rings bolted directly on implants located in place of teeth 33 and 43; Model 02 equal to the previous model, with two more "O" rings placed on posterior implants located in place of teeth 37 and 47; Model 03, called model Bar/Clip with bilateral distal extension, where on the implants in position 33 and 43 was fabricated a Hader bar, linking the two implants with a bilateral distal extension; Model 04, called Bar/Clip with distal extension more two posterior O'rings, where it was held the bar with a distal extension and was added to the set two O'rings on posterior implants; Model 05, named Bar/clip without distal extension bar, where the implants in position 33 and 43 was built by a Hader bar, linking the two implants, without a distal extension; Model 06, called Bar/Clip without distal extension, but with two O'rings on posterior implants. Were applied vertical loads of 08 kg and 12 kg in the second pre molar, molar and second molar. The results showed that: In ali models with presence of posterior implants there was a significant reduction of tensions on residual ridge. The highest stresses around the retainers implants, occurred in the model 03. Models 01 and 02 were the best behaved in face of tensions, around the implants and residual ridge. The ball retainer type, bring less stress to the retainers implants than the bar/clip retainer
