Prevalência de disfunção temporomandibular em pacientes portadores de prótese total dupla (2003)

- Abstract: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a prevalência de sinais e sintomas de DTM em pacientes portadores de prótese total, quando comparados a um grupo de indivíduos dentados. A possível associaçäo com o tempo de uso das próteses e qualidade das mesmas também foi avaliada. A amostra foi constituída de 100 indivíduos (média de idade de 44,4 anos), igualmente divididos em dois grupos: Grupo 1, pacientes portadores de prótese total, e Grupo 2, pacientes dentados. Todos os indivíduos foram solicitados a responder um questionário anamnésico, que deu origem a um índice anamnésico de DTM. Palpaçäo muscular e da ATM, análises da movimentaçäo mandibular, da condiçäo oclusal e das características das próteses também foram realizadas. Testes de associaçäo de qui-quadrado e correlaçäo de Spearman, com nível de significância de 5 por cento, verificaram as hipóteses propostas. Sintomas de DTM moderada e severa foram encontrados em 40 por cento do grupo com PT, enquanto somente 12 por cento dogrupo dentado apresentavam tal condiçäo (p<0,05). A presença de sinais, no entanto, näo foi estatisticamente diferente entre os grupos. A presença de estalidos articulares e discrepâncias maxilomandibulares, também foi mais prevalente no grupo com PT (p<0,05). Näo foi encontrada, todavia, correlaçäo entre o tempo de uso das próteses e a presença ou severidade de DTM. Os resultados indicam uma maior prevalência de sintomas de DTM no grupo portador de PT, apesar disto näo se relacionar acaracterísticas específicas das próteses. Tais achados devem ser avaliados com cautela devido à flutuaçäo natural dos sintomas de DTM
