- Abstract: We assume, as starting point, that the term "painful work" doesn´t have a clear concept. For this motive this research intends to contribute to its delimitation, departing from the common sense knowledge of urban bus drivers about his work. This knowledge was analysed through the point of view of social representation. The field study lasted for approximately four months when observations, talks, follow up of the routine of work and interviews were realized with drivers of a garage and two bus lines from the municipal company of collective urban transportation in São Paulo. We concluded that Painful Work is referred to as work contexts that produce discomfort, effort and physical and mental pain, felt in excess over which the drivers have no control. The exercise of control is upheld by familiarity, power and subjective limit. Impossibility to exercising it can lead it to "rupture". In order to operate the control, driver recur to "adaptative actions" created and praticed collectively. They have as an end the adjustment driver-work and exists in every one of the contexts of work, including when the "rupture" occurs. Although we have placed in focus only the class of drivers of urban buses, the conclusions of this study can be used in the study of pain in work in other categories of professionals
