- Abstract: A obesidade é um dos principais fatores para o desenvolvimento de hipertensão arterial. O objetivo da presente revisão é proporcionar uma visão de alguns dos principais mecanismos envolvidos na associação entre obesidade e hipertensão arterial, discutindo sua possível implicação no contexto das doenças cardiovasculares. A associação entre obesidade e hipertensão arterial, inicialmente atribuída a fatores hemodinâmicos atualmente, é considerada muito mais complexa e envolve vários fatores, entre eles a resistência à insulina, a disfunção endotelial, o acúmulo de tecido adiposo branco, a ativação aumentada do sistema renina-angiotensina-aldosterona e do sistema nervoso simpático, ao lado do sistema endocanabinoide. Mais recentemente, a enzima AMPK (AMPactivated protein kinase) tem surgido como um integrador dos diferentes sistemas envolvidos. O entendimento dos mecanismos envolvidos nessa associação é de grande importância, tendo em vista que pode levar ao planejamento de estratégias terapêuticas que tenham como meta impedir o desenvolvimento das desordens cardiovasculares associadas a essas condições.
