- Abstract: The present experiment analyzed the effects of symmetry training on the acquisition of conditional discriminations. An arbitrary matching-to-sample task involving six four stimulus sets was employed. Two normal adults were exposed to the training of 36 conditional discriminations distributed in two different sets. Set 1 included the 24 possible conditional relations established among the stimuli A-B-C Sets, that is. 4 AB, 4 BC and 4 CA relations and their symmetric BA, CB and AC counterparts. Set 2 included only 4 DE 4 EF and 4 FD relations. In Set 2 training each relation was presented two times more than the relations in Set 1. Under continous reinforcement conditions, the procedure compared the acquisition of conditional discriminations with (Set 1) and without (Set 2) symmetric counterparts. Main results showed that the conditional relations were acquired earlier in training and accumulated fewer errors when accompanied by their symmetric couterparts (Set 1 versus Set 2). These results suggest methodological alternatives to the procedures that evaluate symmetry in the absence of reinforcement
