- Abstract: Capuchin monkeys are dexterous object manipulators with eclectic foraging techniques such as stone-aided nut-cracking. Acquisition of such sophisticated abilities may involve socially biased learning. Nut-cracking is frequently watched by other individuals, usually younger, less proficient, and well tolerated to the point of some scrounging being allowed by the nutcracker. Early studies showed that the choice of observational targets is an active process. We report preliminary data comparison between a semi-free ranging, provisioned group of brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus sp.) at P.E.T. (São Paulo, Brazil) and a wild non-provisioned group of bearded capuchins (Cebus libidinosus) in a Cerrado/Caatinga (Northeastern Brazil), concerning the choice of observational targets. Among the 216 nut-cracking events registered in the semi-free group, 83% where by adults, 15% by juveniles, and 2% by infants. Similarly, in the wild group of 339 nut-cracking bouts 77% where performed by adults and 23% by juveniles (infants did not take part in the activity). 32,42% (semi-free) and 22% (wild) of nutcracking events were watched by other individuals. Adults (of both sexes) where the main observational targets in the semi-free group, while in the wild group males were targeted significantly more than females, the alpha-male being the most observed individual. 34,3% (semi-free) and 55% (wild) of the observational events resulted in scrounging. For the wild group, correlations werefound between observation and proficiency, observation and frequency, and observation and productivity, while in the semi-free group no such correlations were found due to the fact that individuals did not differ significantly in these categories
