- Abstract: This synposium addresses issues of cultural differences between and within countries on South America with respect to the assessment of behavioral and emotional problems of children and adolescents. All studies assessed problems using instruments from the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA). First presentation will report finding from the first epidemiological study of behavioral and emotional problems of children ever conducted in Uruguay. Participants were 1,374 children ages 6 to 11 assessed by their parentes using a Spanish translation of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Second presentation will report findings from selfreports on a Spanish translation of the Youth Self-Report (YSR) obtained from some 600 14- to 18-year-old adolescents in Bolivia. Findings address the factor structure of the YSR, the reliability and validity of YSR scales, and the effect of urban versus rural residence on scores. Third presentation will discuss findings on the comparative efficacy of two modes of delivering a urine alarm behavioral intervention with enuretic children in S. Paulo, Brazil. Results related to dropout rate, enuretic outcome, and changes in scores on the CBCL will be presented. Fourth presentation will report preliminary assessment data for 32 low-income Brazilian adolescent users of illicit drugs living in poor and violent urban conditions. The adolescents were referred by the Judicial system in Porto Alegre (Brazil) to the Laboratory of Cognitive Interventions of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul.
